"Not only do we teach real self-defense but we give the kids of Keswick the tools they need for success in life"
'Will martial arts make my kid violent?'
Absolutely not! In fact, the opposite is the norm for those training in martial arts. We don’t teach kids how to kick and punch so they can go and beat up the neighbor’s kids. We teach them how to defend themselves, avoid confrontation and how to have the confidence not to be a target for other children. We teach kids self-defense as a tool for personal growth and development. Children learn martial arts and get their energy out here in a safe and controlled environment. Kids learn to treat others as they want to be treated. They learn to respect all living things – from their parents to pets. Often, kids who were violent before they joined our class change, and become non-violent. So no, martial arts won’t make your child violent! 🙂
'Will my child get hurt?'
I’ve had children come to my program for years without ever obtaining a single injury. This is actually the case with most children. Have children gotten injured in our martial arts classes? Yes, some have. But the injuries are no different than those which kids who play baseball and other sports get. Our instructors have taken extensive instructor training programs as well asd Coaching Certification programs, CPR training and are 100% qualified to Coach and ensure the safety of everyone in their care. From padded floors and walls, to proper gear, to step-by- step instruction – we do everything in our power to insure your child’s safety. I can’t guarantee your child won’t be injured – but I can tell you that almost no children receive injuries in our programs. And that’s because we take your child’s safety very seriously.
'Will my child have fun? Will he want to stick with the program?'
When parents take their kids to appointments – normally the parent has to run around and do everything in their power to get their children to the appointment on time. “Hurry up!” they shout, “We’ll be late!” (How many times have you said this?) But with martial arts, something fascinating happens… Often the children are the ones yelling these things! They don’t want to be late, and they never want to miss a class. In fact, I know of many parents who use martial arts as an incentive to get chores done. If the kids are good, do their chores, and do their homework – they get martial arts as a reward. That’s because your child will have tons of fun. They’ll be laughing and smiling throughout the entire class. And because they’ll constantly be setting and reaching new goals – They will want to stick with the program. It will become a part of their life as if it was always there – and the best part is that our programs will be a very positive part of your childs life in many ways.
'Is martial arts just for boys or can my girl take martial arts too?'
On this page I’ve said the “he” a couple of times. But the truth is, there are just as many girls in many of our classes as there are boys. Girls love martial arts just as much, and get the same fulfillment out of it as boys do. Martial Arts is something that everyone should learn but, in particular, the martial arts that we teach is something all girls should learn. We teach “Thai Jitsu” which is a mix of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Thai Boxing so students learn how to throw Punches, Kicks, knees and elbows standing up and also how to defend themselves on the ground which is where 90% of fights end up and where a male attacker would want to take them. Also, if I’ve learned anything in my years of teaching, it’s that girls are just as tough as boys. Many are even tougher! We’ve had girls in the past that take great pride in competing against boys and winning gold regularly. One of our current Coaches is one of these girls. 😉 So you don’t have to worry about your little girl getting hurt, or feeling scared because she’ll be practicing with boys. In fact, the boys may even be the ones who are scared.
'What age is appropriate for martial arts?'
We have programs our Youth Thai Jitsu classes that are for kids ages 5 to 13 years, our teen classes for kids ages 13-18 and our Adult Programs for those 18+. … even Women’s only classes. This ensures that students are training amongst their peers. This is unique compared to many places and means that a 40 year old won’t be in the same class as a 14 year old or a 8 year old. 🙂
'Will my child learn a talent that they can be proud of?'
Many children find pride in being able to do “cool” things like dancing, juggling, singing, playing an instrument, etc., etc., etc. Learning the skill of combat gives children even more pride because it gives them the confidence and knowledge that they could be safe and defend themselves if they had to. We have a competition team at our gym and, for the kids that are interested, they are welcome to compete against other martial artist and put their skills to the test. Our Adult programs have many competitors (all of our Youth Instructors are active and sucessful competitors) so, even if your child has no interest in competing, it’s great peice-of-mind knowing that what your child will be learning is constantly being put to the test with great success. Not every gym competes in these high level events of Mixed Martial Arts where ALL martial arts are welcome to see which is the best.
